Star Wars Outlaws Lead Discloses the Scale of Each In-Game Planet
The creative head behind Star Wars Outlaws has shared details on the expansive nature of the game’s planetary environments.
Speaking to Edge Magazine, Julian Gerighty, the creative director of Outlaws, provided a comparison to quantify the expanse of the game’s worlds. “Imagine the size of a single planet being roughly equivalent to two regions from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey,” Gerighty illustrated.
He further emphasized that the scale is substantial yet sensible. “We’re not aiming to recreate an entire country like England. The planets are designed to be extensive but still within a scope that’s feasible for players to explore and for our team at Ubisoft Massive to intricately design.”
Gerighty also pointed out a significant design choice for the game: the avoidance of procedural generation. Each planet and location in Star Wars Outlaws is meticulously handcrafted. “We haven’t just algorithmically generated a planet. Every environment is deliberately built.”
This handcrafted approach sets Star Wars Outlaws apart from games like No Man’s Sky or Bethesda’s upcoming Starfield, which mix procedural generation with hand-placed points of interest to create vast, explorable universes.
The complete interview with Gerighty in Edge Magazine offers more insights into the development of Star Wars Outlaws.
As we look towards its 2024 launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, there’s also buzz about the game potentially bypassing a Steam release in favor of availability exclusively through Ubisoft Connect.
I like this. When you say demo, do you mean that long trailer/gameplay video that was released?
