Developers Unveil Reputation System in Star Wars Outlaws
The factions and gangs in Star Wars Outlaws are integral to the game’s ambitious reputation system.
In a recent interview with GameInformer, senior narrative systems designer Alice Rendell and lead systems designer Matthieu Delisle elaborated on the player encounters in Star Wars Outlaws. They highlighted the significant impact of the reputation system on gameplay.
Delisle explained that the reputation system is central to the game’s narrative, especially within the criminal underworld of the Star Wars universe. “We wanted to tell a scoundrel-based story,” said Delisle. “And we knew we wanted the game to be about choice and consequences, so the reputation system naturally became a way for the player to interact with the game.”
Rendell and Delisle described protagonist Kay Vess as a cunning scoundrel who manipulates various factions for her gain, just as they do her. According to Rendell, every game mechanic is built around the reputation system.
Players can exploit the reputation system to maximize profits, even betraying certain characters or factions. For example, Rendell noted that if Kay needs an item from a faction, she can either steal it or, if her reputation is good enough, simply take it without conflict.
This system means players must be mindful of their actions and relationships with each faction, as hanging around territories with a poor reputation could lead to trouble.
Star Wars Outlaws is set to launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on August 30.
