Combat in Star Wars Outlaws Goes Beyond Cover and Precision Shooting

Massive Entertainment elaborated on the dynamic combat system of Star Wars Outlaws during a recent interview with GamesRadar+. After showcasing gameplay at Ubisoft Forward, the game, featuring the daring Kay Vess and her ally Nix, promises to invigorate the familiar Star Wars setting.

Post-reveal, creative director Julian Gerighty gave insights into the game’s unique combat approach. He emphasized that players will not engage as typical soldiers but as cunning outlaws, utilizing an arsenal of gadgets and the environment to gain the upper hand.

Gerighty pointed out, “In Star Wars, being an outlaw doesn’t involve just hiding and aiming for the perfect shot. You’re the resourceful underdog, using every tool at your disposal, including your companion Nix—not just cover and headshots.”

The gameplay trailer highlighted a special “trick shot” ability, showcasing Kay in action both on foot and on her Speeder Bike. This ability seems to add a strategic layer to combat, similar to the Dead Eye system in Red Dead Redemption, a comparison that Gerighty welcomes.

“The ‘Trick Shot’ is designed to make players feel exceptionally skilled in crucial moments. You charge it, then release it at the right time, adding to the frequency of these empowered moments,” Gerighty explains.

While there’s much more to be revealed about Star Wars Outlaws, the information shared suggests a versatile combat experience. And even if the game includes substantial cover-shooting elements complemented by trick shots, it’s shaping up to be a well-received addition to the Star Wars game universe.

Star Wars Outlaws is set to debut in 2024, available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
