Star Wars Outlaws: There’s a whole galaxy out there

Star Wars Outlaws: There’s a whole galaxy out there

Comparisons between Star Wars Outlaws and Red Dead Redemption 2 have been circulating, and it’s easy to see why. The gameplay trailer for Outlaws, though brief, hinted at a universe rich with intricately detailed environments and the kind of emergent narrative moments that are hallmarks of Rockstar’s acclaimed titles. Gerighty acknowledges such parallels with humility, expressing immense respect for Rockstar’s work and feeling honored by the association.

The vision for Star Wars Outlaws is one of grand scale and interconnectedness. Where Star Wars Jedi: Survivor offered expansive realms segmented by progression and load times, Massive’s aim is a more interconnected and expansive experience. The studio is crafting entire open-world planets that promise seamless transitions from on-foot exploration to high-speed chases on a custom speeder bike, and to space travels in the Trailblazer, an EML-850 light freighter, darting through space to new systems and engaging in tight skirmishes with Imperial Fighters.

While the total count of environments in Star Wars Outlaws is not yet disclosed, the gameplay footage has teased at least three major areas amidst the game’s scattered cosmic debris. Original locations like those within the Akiva and Toshara systems have been developed in partnership with LucasFilm, alongside recognizable settings such as the frosty world of Kijimi. However, Gerighty prefers to steer the conversation from quantifiable details to the overarching ambition of the project.

“We’re constantly asking, ‘How do we craft an open-world Star Wars game that captivates with richness and depth?'” Gerighty explains. The game’s universe will be finely crafted rather than procedurally generated, ensuring a quality-over-quantity approach to world-building.

The essence of a “living” open world is found in the subtleties. Currently, we catch glimpses of life in Toshara’s settlement, Jaunta’s Hope, with NPCs buzzing around on speeders and alien residents engaging beneath the shade of aged metal giants. Gerighty envisions a game where the allure of the unknown beckons, where every turn in the Outer Rim tempts you with the promise of adventure and the temptation of the untamed scoundrel’s life.
